The Northern Lights Necklace
The Northern Lights Necklace
The first thing that drew me to these rainbow druzy quartz beads was their color. Deep greens, blues, and purples seem to shift across their surfaces as the light changes, reminding me of the Northern Lights. I knew I wanted to create something that would let those colors take center stage.
What makes these stones especially interesting is the contrast in their surfaces. Most of each bead has a soft, matte finish, but scattered throughout are small pockets of sparkling druzy crystals. No two beads are quite alike, and I love the unexpected bits of texture and shimmer that reveal themselves as you look more closely.
Each bead is individually hand-knotted on silk, a traditional technique that gives the necklace a beautiful drape while keeping the beads gently separated. I finished the strand with a hand-forged sterling silver spiral clasp, adding a sculptural detail that complements the organic character of the stones.
The Northern Lights Necklace has a wonderful richness of color without feeling overly elaborate. It’s one of those pieces where the materials really do most of the talking, and I was happy to let them.
